The Science Writer is responsible for promoting to the media the important scientific findings presented in the American Thoracic Society’s journals and during International Conference, as well as exploring other ways to communicate to medical professionals, opinion leaders, and patients the central role the ATS plays in discovering, disseminating, and using new knowledge to help patients.
Must be an excellent writer with the ability to translate scientific information for an educated, but lay, public. In addition to writing press releases, the science writer will actively pitch stories to writers, editors and producers; look for opportunities to place letters to the editor and op-ed pieces and prepare media advisories to publicize the ATS view on important public health issues; and maintain a database of media contacts.
This is a full-time position with a salary of $50,000 and an excellent benefits package. A bachelor’s degree is a minimum, with preference given to those with degrees in the sciences or journalism, as is five years’ experience in science or medical writing.
