Job Description
Reporting to the Newsroom Manager, will assist in the formulation, implementation, and administration of all press strategy for The Mount Sinai Medical Center, which includes The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. This team member will effectively translate and communicate basic science, clinical, and education news, along with news surrounding Mount Sinai’s physicians, programs, and services, and proactively place such stories. In turn, the News Specialist will help position the organization as a top leader in health care, education, and scientific research.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Address press inquiries and proactively differentiate Mount Sinai from its competitors. Position the institution as a world-leading medical provider, pioneering research institute, and innovator in medical education
- Translate and communicate basic science, clinical, and educational news through the writing and production of communications materials such as press releases, media advisories, and public service announcements
- Handle special projects with strategic media partners and create new partnerships with external associations and trade groups
- Differentiate and position individual departments, physicians, programs, and services to elevate their reputation among key constituencies and consumer markets, locally, nationally, and globally
- Build and maintain relationships with key press and internal constituents, and help manage press relations during major events and crises
- Manage the coordination of press conferences
- Attend news meetings and offer creative ideas for enhancing coverage via print publications, web, television, and radio
- Work with the Web Managing Editor to produce and update content for the digital Newsroom
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5-7 years of solid experience in communications, specifically press relations
- Relationships with local, national, and trade press
- Strong background managing camera crews and trafficking, coordinating, and managing information essential to the production of news stories
- Working knowledge of the health care industry, science or biomedical issues is a definitive advantage
- An established track record of having managed the flow of information in and out of an organization
- A strong public/media background in a large, complex organization. Health care communications experience a plus
- Excellent written, analytic, and verbal communication skills
- Ability to effectively translate scientific data and communicate it to a variety of publics in a compressible manner
- Ability to work effectively with team members and executives under tight deadlines
- Crisis management experience demonstrating strong ability in responding to urgent issues
- Proficiency in using databases such as LexisNexis and Bacon’s MediaMap, and in computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
