Job Description:
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory seeks to hire a fulltime science writer with very strong writing and interpersonal skills, and both the sensitivity and talent to convey to lay audiences highly complex stories involving cutting-edge molecular biology, genomics, and neuroscience.
Prior experience in writing about this subject matter is essential. Working in concert with the Senior Science Writer, the Science Writer will have two critical responsibilities. He or she will keep current with the scientific output of the Laboratory, a world-class research institution consisting of approximately 50 labs, and will prepare lucid news releases about significant research results. This writing is targeted almost exclusively for the lay press and general-interest readers.
The writer will also work with members of the scientific and lay press to keep them abreast of latest developments at the Laboratory. Cultivating media contacts is an essential part of the job. The objective is not simply to write good stories, but to place them in major media. The writer will have the opportunity to convey news and information in new media, playing an important role in developing content for our upgraded website, now under construction. The writer should be comfortable conducting recorded interviews that can be converted to podcasts and other web-based content. This is a prime opportunity for an early-career science writer.
