Reporting to the Director of Lamont-Doherty and working closely with the New York-based Senior Science Writer at the Earth Institute, the incumbent will be responsible for helping provide media outreach for Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and The Earth Institute, focusing on earth sciences including climate change, natural hazards, ocean sciences, geology and other areas of critical focus as determined by institutional objectives. Identifies and reports on newsworthy activities of the institution and its scientists. Executes appropriate media and marketing strategies to increase press and public recognition of Lamont-Doherty and the Earth Institute. Maintains contact with reporters and editors to place newsworthy stories; writes press releases; responds to media requests for interviews or information; works with scientists on media interactions; helps to organize and staff press briefings to address specific issues or events and to meet strategic objectives. Supports the Earth Institute’s Senior Science Writer in implementing media policy and science coverage.
Requirements:
BA/BS or the equivalent experience required, preferably in Journalism or related specialty. Two to three years of directly related experience required. Journalism/communications experience in issues related to earth sciences, and experience in a multi-media environment required. Must be reliable, have strong reportorial. organizational, written and verbal skills, as well as demonstrated computer proficiency. Must be able to work as part of a team. Knowledge of Microsoft Office required. Must be willing to work at the Lamont-Doherty Campus in Palisades, N.Y. and travel as necessary to Columbia’s main campus. Science journalism
experience and/or experience in a university/physical science research setting highly desirable
