Position Description and Responsibilities
- Works with the editorial staff to develop the news and service sections of Cancer Today magazine.
- Works with the editorial staff to develop stories and assemble contributors for these sections of the magazine.
- Works with the editorial staff to determine the editorial line-up for these sections in each issue of Cancer Today.
- Keeps up to date with activities, issues and concerns of the survivor and patient communities to ensure that Cancer Today is relevant to our readership.
- Reviews the content of scientific journals and meetings for potential story ideas and special issue topics.
- Attends scientific and advocacy meetings as required to identify stories, sources and topics of interest to CR’s readers.
- Assigns articles to freelance writers and edits assigned articles.
- Writes news stories and other content as required.
- Prepares news and service sections for publication.
- Works with the creative director’s design team to develop appropriate are for articles as required.
- Writes, edits and performs other assignments at the request of the executive editor.
Website/e-communication:
- Works with the editorial staff to develop content and features for the Cancer Today website
- Works with the executive editor and the Survivor and Patient Advocacy Administrative Manager.
- Develops content and stories for the Survivors and Advocates section of the AACR website.
- Writes articles and content for the websites as needed and assigns articles and content to freelance writers as required; edits freelance writers’ articles.
- Updates the Cancer Today website with each issue of the magazine and as needed.
- Develops and produces the monthly Cancer Today e-newsletter and e-blasts.
- Writes, edits and performs other assignments at the request of the executive editor.
Position Requirements
- B.A. or B.S. Degree
- Five years professional consumer magazine or newspaper experience.
- Ability to convey scientific and medical concepts accurately and engagingly in lay language.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and creative skills.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines.
- Ability to work on multiple assignments at the same time.
- Ability to work dependably as an integral part of a small editorial team.
- Excellent understanding of biomedical Experience with website fundamentals, including ability to maintain, update and post new information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and other basic computer skills.
- Understanding of publication layout, design and production.
- Copy-editing and proof-reading skills.
