Job Description:
The Visionlearning project (www.visionlearning.com), a science education website funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education, seeks an experienced and professional writer who will work with our Chemistry Editor in the writing and production of online chemistry modules as well as the development of chemistry-related content for other areas of our website. Specific tasks include:
- Work with the Chemistry Editor to outline topics for chemistry modules;
- Write and assist with fully developing educational modules related to chemistry;
- Write standards-based quiz questions and support the writing of relevant glossary definitions to accompany new modules;
- Participate in our social media and outreach strategy by contributing chemistry- and teacher-related blog posts relevant to the content.
The position is envisioned as a part-time contractual hire with a compensation rate to be negotiated on a per module basis. Total compensation within the first year can be up to $18,000 range with 10 – 12 modules expected in this period. Compensation will be on a by-module rate of $1,500 to $1,800 per module; glossary definitions are compensated at $0.50 per word. The position requires extensive professional writing experience in a science-related area. In addition, creativity, initiative, the ability to work with others, and the capacity to adapt to the writing voice of the project while adhering to style guidelines are critical skills. Experience writing for the college educational sector, particularly engaging writing directed at undergraduate students is highly desired. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree, ideally in chemistry or a chemistry-related field, is expected. Documented professional writing experience is required.
