SciArts Producer, Science Friday (FT, NYC)

Job Title:
SciArts Producer, Science Friday

Full time, New York, NY

Job Description:
Science Friday is looking for a radio and multimedia producer with a keen interest in the intersection of science and the arts (SciArts).

For nearly 23 years, Science Friday (www.sciencefriday.com) has been a trusted source for news and information about science, technology, health, medicine and other mind bending stuff. Produced by the nonprofit Science Friday Initiative and distributed by NPR, our radio show is broadcast live each week on over 400 public radio stations and Sirius/XM, reaching over two million listeners a week. We also produce original SciFri videos, digital content, and educational materials for our website. We are a growing organization with a staff that is dedicated to the idea that science and technology should be part of everyday conversation.

We’re looking for someone with the skills and desires to seek out and showcase artistic endeavors that have a science slant — film, theater, painting, drawings, music, pop culture, literature, etc. The right candidate for this job will have journalism experience and a genuine interest in the arts, but also care about science and culture.

This position will involve two distinct tasks: 1. finding and researching story ideas for radio production and creating new print, video, and/or audio content; and 2. adding additional SciArts content to our website (additional interviews, slideshows, and videos).

Since this position is underwritten through a Foundation grant it will involve project management and collaboration with our fundraising staff to ensure fulfillment of grant requirements.

Qualifications:

  • 3 years of professional journalism experience is required. Radio production experience is preferred with a focus on science, technology or arts;
  • Interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
  • Self-starter who can work independently and has ability to follow up;
  • Demonstrated experience with Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X or 7, Protools or other professional grade editing software preferred;
  • Experience with HTML and other aspects of online publishing (via a CMS);
  • Track record of successfully managing grant-funded projects;
  • Knowledge of audio production and story reporting preferred.

This position is based in New York City. We do provide occasional flexibility to work from home after successful completion of a three-month review and at the discretion of your supervisor. Some overnight travel may be required (less than 15 nights per year). We offer a challenging environment, the opportunity to work with a dedicated staff and learn new skills. This full time position comes with a competitive salary and health and 401k benefits.

To apply please send a resume, cover letter, and at least one work sample to JobP503@sciencefriday.com. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to send story pitches and additional work samples, as well as participate in multiple interviews.
