Job Title:
Video Producer, Science Friday
Full time, New York, NY
Job Description:
For nearly 23 years, Science Friday (www.sciencefriday.com) has been a trusted source for news and information about science, technology, health, medicine and other mind bending stuff. Produced by the nonprofit Science Friday Initiative and distributed by NPR, our radio show is broadcast live each week on over 400 public radio stations and Sirius/XM, reaching over two million listeners a week. We also produce original SciFri videos, digital content, and educational materials for our website. We are a growing organization with a staff that is dedicated to the idea that science and technology should be part of everyday conversation. We see video as another creative outlet for sharing science news, an opportunity to cover visual stories, and a way to discover new audiences.
The Video Producer’s challenge is to be inspired by our mission, and to make the best use of a visual medium in telling science stories. Working closely with the Executive Producer and web and radio production staffs, you will come up with creative ways to adapt the tone, style, and editorial voice of the radio program to video. You will participate in weekly editorial meetings and find new ways to integrate video content with the radio program. Your primary job will be to create two to three original videos per month. You will also oversee the work of freelance videographers, and find and nurture video partnerships.
This position requires managing a budget, allocating funds efficiently, and consulting on grants and contracts related to video production. It also requires collaboration with marketing, web production, and radio production staffs to manage presentation and effective distribution of video content. Additionally, the video producer will help track the performance of videos using analytics tools and maintain awareness of industry and distribution trends as they pertain to digital video and digital platforms.
The ideal candidate would feel comfortable discussing the videos as a part of a live radio broadcast.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conceive, record, film, produce, edit and sometimes narrate original video content;
- Assign and oversee the production of videos by contractors, interns, and Science Friday staff;
- Search for videos that might be featured on the radio program;
- Post and update video content to the Science Friday CMS;
- Seek out and manage partnerships with likeminded video outlets;
- Maintain the video podcast and YouTube page, and moderate comments on video channels.
Skills and Experience:
Demonstrated competency with Final Cut Pro X or 7 and a DSLR work flow is a must; working knowledge of After Effects, Pro Tools or other audio editing software, Photoshop and Flash are a plus. This job requires playing nicely with others and working with a small but dedicated staff. Experience with audio production and story reporting preferred. 3 years of professional video production is required.
This position is based in New York City. We do provide occasional flexibility to work from home after successful completion of a three month review and at the discretion of your supervisor. Some overnight travel may be required (less than 15 nights per year). We offer a challenging environment, the opportunity to work with a dedicated staff and learn new skills. This full time position comes with a competitive salary and health and 401k benefits.
