A Virtual Conversation with Mayo Clinic Pediatrician Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse

Science Writers in New York is excited to present our first interview on children and COVID-19 with Nipunie Rajapakse, M.D. (@nrajapakseMD), a Mayo Clinic physician who specializes in pediatric infectious diseases, including COVID-19. 

Dr. Rajapakse will speak with SWINY co-chair David Levine (@dlloydlevine) about her efforts to offer advice and counsel to parents with children who are not yet eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Rajapakse has given media interviews and used social media to help parents who are trying to keep their children safe both at home and school from COVID-19. 

About Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse

Nipunie Rajapakse, M.D., is a pediatric infectious diseases physician. In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Rajapakse is active in research and education. Her primary research interests include studying ways of optimizing antibiotic use in children (antimicrobial stewardship) to decrease antibiotic resistance and other harmful effects and identifying the best strategies to educate medical providers and the public about appropriate antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Rajapkse has worked for the World Health Organization and has an interest in global health and outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases.

A frequent contributor to the Mayo Clinic News Network, Dr. Rajapakse is vice chair of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and medical director of the Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.
