Feb. 2: The Fight Against Vaccine Misinformation: A Virtual Conversation with Dr. John Moore

The Medical Community’s—and Neil Young’s—Fight on Vaccine Misinformation

A Virtual Conversation with
Dr. John Moore

Wednesday, February 2, at 7 PM EST
on Zoom

Science Writers in New York is pleased to once again present Dr. John Moore, professor of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Moore, an expert on vaccine research, will talk to SWINY co-chair David Levine (@dlloydlevine) about vaccine misinformation.

Dr. Moore feels misinformation about science has adversely affected doctor-patient communication and has led to people getting ill and even dying. He will discuss his leadership in the fight against misinformation and will answer questions about the latest variants.

In November, 2021, the Kaiser Family Foundation issued a report that found COVID-19 misinformation was ubiquitous. They found that 78 percent of the public believes or is unsure about at least one false statement, and nearly a third believe at least four of eight false statements tested. Furthermore, belief in misinformation was much more common among unvaccinated adults and Republicans.

Social media has been a large source of misinformation. Facebook, Google, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Spotify have been the major players, although most of the breaking news has been about Spotify.

Dr. Moore was one of 270 physicians, scientists and healthcare workers who signed an open letter to Spotify calling on Spotify to implement a better misinformation policy. The letter called out one show in particular: the Joe Rogan Experience. The writers noted that, “By allowing the propagation of false and societally harmful assertions, Spotify is enabling its hosted media to damage public trust in scientific research and sow doubt in the credibility of data-driven guidance offered by medical professionals.”

On January 26, Spotify said that it would remove Neil Young’s music after he posted a public letter calling on Spotify to choose between him and Joe Rogan, who he accused of spreading misinformation about the coronavirus and vaccines.
